Friday Quickie Techniques and Tips: Wet watercolor wash backgrounds

Hi everyone!  Hope you  are ready for the Friday Quickie Techniques and Tips Video Series to be back from Holiday Vacation! 🙂  We had a nice little break and hope your holidays were fabulous!

Today's video is super awesome and easy:  Wet Watercolor Wash Backgrounds!  I picked this because watercolored backgrounds are absolutely everywhere these days–I got a new Ipad cover for Christmas from my bestie, Kate Spade, and it has a watercolor look to it.  I've seen stationary everywhere with watercoloring and my cousin is getting married this summer–the big trend in invites (which I am making, of course) is WATERCOLOR!!  I'll post them when I make them for you to see!

The best part of these cards are that they all have the same dimensions:

  • watercolor paper: 3 1/4 x 4 1/2"
  • Layer for watercolor paper: 3 3/8 x 4 5/8" (Island indigo for this card)
  • card is half sheet :8 1/2 x 5 1/2 (Night of Navy for this card)

The flower is punched with the Itty Bitty Accents Punch pack flower and then water-colored with Night of Navy.  The center is a Perfect White Embellishment and the sparkles are courtesy of Wink of Stella–THANK YOU STELLA! 😉

Look at the beautiful patterns that form with the water blending the colors together!  So pretty!!

Melon Mambo–on this one I did the background and then I kind of pooled water on top where the greeting was going to go (before I stamped it).  That produced the lighter-looking "window" for the words.  Stamps are One big Meaning, Dots all Day (background)

And the sparkles are from Sliver Glimmer Paper for the flower punches, and wink of stella for the edges of the watercoloring–oh dear I am going to be addicted to that stuff!!

Another great use of another great Sale-a-bration Set:  Botanicals for You–definately a must have!!  Here I embossed in Gold and watercolored in Rich Razzleberry, Melon Mambo, Pumpkin Pie and Daffodil Delight.  Another pretty color combo!

Same colors just a different blending of them.  However, I stamped the greeting after the fact in Black Archival (It didn't stamp super great) so I used a black Stampin Write marker to fill in the words (can you see I got a little carried away on the O in for)  Still looks great but lesson learned:  when using watercolor paper, just emboss the images for best results!

The colors still blend beautifully and the simple gold glimmer banner punch looks great!

This was actually the very first card I made and is probably still my favorite!  I love the soft colors, the pretty blending and that Hello is the BEST set ever!!
