Friday Quickie Techniques & Tips: Masking Tape Backgrounds

Video Tutorial on how to create this awesome background using Stampin Up's The Open Sea Stamp Set with more ideas on my blog.

This week's Friday Quickie is one you may have seen before. I love the idea and tried it a long time ago without results that I liked, so I never did much with it.  I saw this card which I shamelessly CASED from a pin by Claudia Perry, a fellow demonstrator. (though I said she is from Australia in my video, that's not true.  My bad! 🙂

I love the look of the striped background.  It is so easy to create using Painter's Tape!  I like the blue tape in order to keep it from sticking to the cardstock and ripping it.  The images are stamped with the By The Tide set, which is on the retiring list, so make sure to grab it if you like it! 🙂

Once I made the stripes, I figured that I could go well beyond that and build some great backgrounds, so I got going and built this background up starting with Pink Pirouette and Blushing Bride using the wider 1 1/2" tape.  I then continued with the 1" tape using Calypso Coral and Watermelon Wonder.  Finally I used some Washi Tape (about 3/4") to add Real Red and Rose Red.  I LOVE the look!!

I stamped the greeting (from Another Thank You) in Black Archival ink.  I also added some spritzing with my Black marker.  I just love how it turned out! I thought about adding some punched flowers, but decided it looked great as it was, so I left it alone!

I decided to use a couple of the backgrounds to stamp with the flower from Garden In Bloom.  I love how it turned out! I fussy cut out each flower and added punches to finish it off.  I used the petite petal punch as well as the flower from the Tree Builder punch.

To make the card, I stamped the Watercolor Wash background ( I first tried a light colored masking tape background and let's just say that DID NOT WORK OUT!) I stamped the stems, leaves and added the flowers and then added the greeting stamped from One Big Meaning.

I think it turned out great!  Love the springy look!  After I got that done, I decided it was time to try something else, PLAID!!

The look was perfect for a Man Card!!  I used the Ovals Framelits (these are being retired, but new ones are coming with plain and scallops, FYI) and the set, Guy Greetings.  The colors are Soft Sky, Wisteria Wonder, Rich Razzleberry and Elegant Eggplant.

I love the look.  I think I will play with the spacing of the lines and colors some more, but the card turned out great!
