Welcome to The Creativity Cave and another edition of Friday Quickie Techniques and Tips!! This week I have a tip that is going to make you happy!!! How to keep your big shot cutting plastic plates from warping!
When intricate dies first came out, they would not cut all the way through and it was VERY frustrating! We added waxed paper, dryer sheets and all kinds of shims to try getting those little pieces to fall out. Then came along the Magnetic plate and Precision Base Plates. They worked pretty well, but left us with bubbly, lumpy and bumpy cutting plates. Here is the solution that is likely to knock your socks off and doesn't require much–but the key is the "newer" platform that comes with the thin die adaptor and having your die placed cutting side UP when running through the big shot.
I am really not sure what was done, but this newer platform (it comes standard in a Big Shot if you have purchased one in the last couple of years) is the key to getting great cuts every time!
Here is a card I created (I couldn't get a FABULOUS pic of it, but it is really pretty!!) using the Eastern Beauty Bundle
I have been kind of stuck in a Black and Lemon Lime Twist rut lately—but I am ok with it–these colors ROCK together!!!!

Wow. Can’t wait to use the BS this way. While I am only a hobby demo (mostly) I am tired of all the ruined cutting plates! Thank you so much Dena! Love the card ♥️
Sounds amazing! Can’t wait to try. Threw three plates away this morning! Perfect timing! Card is beautiful too!
Dena, After watching your video on your quick technique tip to keep your Big Shot cutting plates flat, I have to ask you why you tell us to get rid of our precision base plate and magnetic plate.I would think there would be a time when we might want to use them. These plates and platforms are all made to do a certain job with our Big shot or Stampin Up wouldn’t be selling them in their catalog. I have heard that moving the dies around in different places and not always putting them in the middle helps the plate stay flatter longer. I plan to keep using my platforms and magnetic plate since I’m sure Stampin Up would not reimburse us to buy the new one. Not everyone can afford to throw them out and buy new ones. It’s great if you happen to have the new platform and can use this as an alternative. Thanks for the new information.
Great tip and GORGEOUS card!!!
Cari
SUPER GREAT tip Dena!!
and I have that so often too here..things get lost when I lay them down..weird not?
Dena,I love that you share tips you’ve learned along the way that make crafting easier! This is a great tip and your card is FABulous!
Thank you for the plate tip. I hate spending money on plates. I want to buy stamps and dies.
Glad you liked it!!
Thanks so much, Cari! So glad you liked it!
YAY! So glad you caught it, Lisa!! I hate wasting plates!!
I have used this die cutting technique for a while now but use my magnetic platform. The concept is the same no matter which platform you are using. I’m sure it would work the same on the original platform as well. Placing the die with the cutting edge facing up makes a huge difference. I have the precision plate but really don’t like using it because it warps the cutting plates so badly.
This is a great video to show this method of cutting. Thanks for sharing, Dena.
Great tip !!! Thank you
Thanks for the tip, most appreciated
What do you do if you have to stamp first and then cut out that image? You still just line up your die over the stamped image and adhere with Washi or post it note? I guess it would be possible to cut first and then line up the stamp on the stamparatus if the stamp was one of the photopolymer stamps. They would be fairly easy to stamp on your project with the new stamparatus. However I find it hard to line up the stamp on the plastic when you can’t see through the red rubber. Do you have any tips on how to best use the red rubber stamps on the new stamparatus as to getting them on straight and in the right placement? Thanks for your help and the HUGE tip for saving those big shot plates!
God bless, Linda Snyder
Have you tried this enough times to evaluate how your dies are doing with this new sandwich? With the dies closer to the Big Shot rollers, do the dies maintain their cutting edges? Part of my brain says that those cutting edges would be more subject to “smashing” . I don’t have the new platform but I think this could still work with the old platform. Think of the time we’re going to save by only 1 or 2 passes through the Big Shot to cut with our dies:)
Wow! Thanks!! Perfect- just what I needed!
I love the concept of this card, but I am with Trish. Would you check with SU to see if this damages the dies over time by placing them face up in the Big Shot. Does it dull the cutting blades faster than when placing them face down as instructed to do? Just curious, because I would rather replace cutting pads than lose the use of a die from dull blades. Love watching you. Love your tips and love your cards. Thanks Dena.
Thanks so much for the tip great video
You are very welcome!
Yay!

You are so welcome, Joy!! Enjoy!
Great tip Dena! Thank You! I love the card also!
Thanks, Tammy! Glad you liked it!
I was watching your video and you said putting the bevel edge plates in the oven would melt them.10 miniutes previously I had put my badly bowed big shot bottom plate in the bottom of my oven with an oblong burger press on top of it. So pannicking I ran out to remove it and when I lifted it out the plate was flat! The burger press wasn’t laying flat when I put it on the bowed plate but now it was! I lifed them out and kept the press on the plate using an oven glove and appying pressure until it was cool and its came out lke new.I havent been doing this crafting long and truthfullu i had forced the plate though the b.s and thats why it bowed.I had already bought new plates but now I dont need them. The oven was at 150 and the plate was on an oven tray with the press on top.I am very happy now so thank you.
So glad this worked for you—I’ve not had that experience!! Good for you!

quick question — where can we get big shot cutting board/plates???
Where can you get the Big Shot Thin Die Adapter you showcase? Looking around I can only find an “extended” size adapter. Is this an older Sizzix product?
